Some were, some weren't. There actually is a "northwest passage" above northern Canada in the Arctic Ocean, although this is only open briefly and is a legitamate navigation route for anything besides submarines.

The French initially searched for the Northwest passage, but gave up on the idea when they found that the Mississippi didn't flow SW, but nearly straight south. The English, and later the Americans, continued searching for this mythical passage to the east. The "discovery" of the Rocky Mountains ended the search for what most would describe as a northwest passage, although some continued exploring Canada's northernmost coasts.

In short the answer should be true.

yes they were looking for a north west passage ...
think of it there was not yet a panama channel and it was long way via cape hoorn / magellan straight.

explorers : frobisher , franklin , hudson and more

the search for a northwest passage led to increased exploration of the north american coasts.

however due to arctic climate it was difficult to find a passage and is more or less only possible with ice breakers.

there is also a north east passage from the atlantic to the pacific via the arctic ocean (along the northern coast of russia) . this route was important to some extent during the cold war.

bottom line : true.
