Kids will take any pay offered. (can be screwed)
Experienced people know what the load should pay.

You did not specify what kind of office work these young kids would be doing. It could possibly be just routine clerical work for which your 18-yr experience would have no bearing at all.

It seems to me you strongly believe you have been bypassed. It is at all possible that the reason you did not get the job was your skill (inspite of the 18-yr experience) is about the same as the skill of the kids (fresh out of school)? Given that, the company made it's hiring decision based solely on what is more cost-effective and the young ones were it. Please remember that skills needed in an office setting are quite different from skills learned in the field. I hope this mollifies you. Good luck.

Well I would certainly ask them if I had attended and been refused on the grounds that you state. After that I would approach my local paper and ask them if they knew - a good topic. All to many companys are employing people on low wage yet want a proffessional days work from them. I am all for apprenticships etc., but that is a different issue which actually is becoming or maybe has become NON existent. I wish you look and if you have 18years experience then you hopefully will have the courage to pursue this matter, good luck!

Besides the pay thing
I also know of employers who hire people they can mold to be exactly the type of employee they want
even the best and most experienced people have their own little quirks
but in the end these companies will end up paying more because so often a kid will get trained and than quit

Unfortunately we have to deal with this in a lot of different work Fields. I think the employer pays the younger less money, and then deal with the problems and Drama that go along with some 18 year old - rather than pay someone with experience more money, for less hassle.

I think you really know the answer to this! It's just a matter of economics, unfortunately. They pay these kids much less than they would an experienced driver, such as yourself. Although, I am sure the insurance is much higher, as well as the accident ratio for younger kids. You might try making a chart to show the difference or how much it would cost them! Anyway, I wish you luck...........

you will have an opinion and skill so will require paying more than the minimum wage. I hate dealing with 16-18 year old office staff its a nightmare!

Kids are cheaper and easier to push around. If they quit, there are a million right behind them. You , and I, with experience are a threat to the bosses who don't have much, but are still in positions of authority.

Sucks, doesn't it

to pay them less and not have folk answer them back. Young kids are likely to get on and do the job whereas an experienced person wont take any ****.

Without knowing more background, it is probably because they don't have to pay a new person just starting out as much as they would pay a more experienced person.

Employers are compelled to pay you based on your experience. They want to get away with paying the bare minimum. And you sound way too overqualified for their purposes.
