should I use a sponge or a papertowel to clean it up???

I think whoever caused you to make that mess should help you clean it up, let them figure out what to use :)

Papertowel will absorb it better. the sponge will just spread it around

A towel works fine till morning, then I'd use the sponge....

if the sticky wet mess is on you i suggest using my tongue. Its very absorbent and kills 99.9 percent of all bacteria
