i have got a dell laptop which has a com port,so how can i know what number the com has is it com1 or com2 and can it be com21 because i remember i saw it before on my laptop saying com21.
if its com21 can i change it to com1-8 ?
please let me know.

I'm guessing that you have a Windows machine. Right click on "My Computer", choose "properties", click on "hardware",
click on "device manager", click on the plus sign left of "Ports (COM & LPT). You will find all your ports listed and numbered there.

Generally, the COM port on the side will be COM1 / COM2. Additionally added ports, or other devices such as modems, etc. will take higher port numbers.

on the laptop it always COM1 please enter setup bios of your laptop " it shows how to enter setup at the laptop start ex compaq (press f10 to enter setup" and search for "load defult" then save and exit don't do any thing else to check it u can use a serial mouse or rs232 cabel
