Only if you are going to "El Manu" or to one of the nearby jungle lodges. Bear in mind that Puerto Maldonado, in the Madre de Dios department, is in what is normally referred to as the "lower jungle", so it is very hot and very humid. So, if you can't deal with your clothes sticking to you, or big bugs, better find another spot to visit.
if you're still interested in the jungle but dislike the extreme heat and large bugs, you can try lodges in Tarapoto which is "high jungle" (where the Andes meet the Amazon basin). It cools down in the night (obviously by cool down I mean not as hot as during the day. So, it's still pretty warm, but not scorching) and the bugs are tamer.

The town of Puerto Maldonado does not have much of interest. It is a gateway to visiting three national parks in Peru's Amazon: Manu, Tambopata and Candamo.
