***LMAO...MAYBE. THAT WOULD BE ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS TO SEE.***

If it were an "UP" escalator, it would only go on forever if the slinky was travelling at exactly the same speed as the escalator, and only if the slinky could travel the exact same distance each time. Otherwise, eventually the slinky will be stopped.

Since it's a DOWN escalator, it will come to rest rather quickly, relatively speaking.

Brilliant question!

But unfortunately a slinkie would not go on forever. It is highly unlikely for the slinkie to move downwards at the same rate as the escalator is moving upwards so it would run off one end or the other at some point.

On a down escalator it would just go to the bottom of the escalator. I think you mean an Up escalator.

In which case, if the speed of the slinky exactly matched the rate at which the escalator was going up, then it would remain in motion until any external effects occur, such as turning off the escalator.

probably not for two reasons:
1) escalator steps are generally less steep than regular stairs. The slinky needs to land on a step and then make it over the edge. I think it wouldn't make it over the edge.
2) unless the rate at which the slinky falls and the rate that the escalator rises are perfectly synchronized, eventually the slink will either reach the bottom, or be carried up over the top.

would be EXTREMELY funny to see though and video people when they see it.

I could never get a slinky going for more than 3 steps - and you probably meant an up escalator.

That all depends on the speed of the escalator, but, if the speed of both the moving stairway and the springlike toy were comparable and providing there was a constant supply of electricity then of course it would run forever as you will never stop the gravitational pull of the earth.

Not very good for environment though using all that electricity.

i've got mastered going up a down escalator. you merely truthfully pass a step jointly as working up. Now happening an up escalator is problem and intensely tiring. Dont have faith attempt it whilst your bored in a mall. I failed terrible and landed on my backside various circumstances attempting to defeat this and continually the up escalator comes out on good. yet its hella humorous although whilst your bored with no longer something to do. no longer something says relaxing like out of breath laughter.

No. It would either get to the floor and stop or it would get caught in the workings of the escalator and screw everything up.

No, it would eventually run out of kinetic energy and just sit there until it rode to the top and got pushed down, in which case it would risk getting caught in the teeth of the steps.

you'd need to carefully adjust the speed of the escalator to match the speed of the slinkie.

have fun!
