That is perplexing. Sounds like he's starting to come out of his shell, but by definition he is no longer a hermit. Sounds like communal living. Hippy crab, maybe? Or Herby, as in Herby the Love Bug?

No not really. He probably wants the rent money so that he can buy a sound system. I've heard of this before. It's perfectly normal.
