AMEN, to that. What a sad world we live in, I am totally disgusted. The fault however, is our own. I blame this completely on the breakdown of the family, and I blame that on greed. I was a single mom, divorced, who was FORCED to go to work and make $ to keep the roof over our heads and food on the table, but my children always knew that i would have much ratherd stay home and be there for them always......this was not about the second BMW, this was about refusing to go on welfare/freeluch/food stamps...and hopefully setting a good example for them..
My parents always told me and I always told them...."having good manners will NEVER hurt you".
I open doors for men, I am extrememly polite and my parents were right, good manners have never hurt me. I walk old ladies and men across the street and help them and honor my parents, right or wrong....

I have seen my two children graduate from college and become very good beings. My son is a published author, proffesor and hosts his own radio show, My daughter is currently acting in a play on off broadway...and they are both kind and happy and wonderful, I am very proud....but the thing that made me swell the most with pride was last Christmas we had a man come to our home who I donated my empties to.....he was down and out....a very sad life....my kids made me so proud with how nice they were to him...they wrapped gifts for him and made him feel more at home than I ever could have.....all the teaching I did had stuck....this man died last week....they can always feel good about what they did, and so can I, and so can the ones who taught me.

I know exactly what you mean. Now, i'm not an old man by any standards at my ripe age of 27, but i have noticed that kids & people in general today just don't have any respect for anyone but themselves.

Not just with bus seats or saying please & thank you.... But the way some kids speak to their parents these days is absolutely shocking! If i ever behaved that way when i was a kid I would've gotten a mouthful of soap or a good firm slap to my @$$ to put me in my place.

I totally agree with tiffany above me too! It's not just with young people. It's with everyone! I say please & thank you when i order my meals from burger king & people look at you like you've spoken a different language...... You hold a door for someone & they look at you like you're going to rob them. When i used to ride the public buses I noticed an older gentelman.... in about his 50s who looked rather healthy.... take a seat on a crowded bus... Meanwhile an older woman (possibly in her 80's) entered the bus hunched over with a cane & the man did not budge even though he was the youngest & seemingly the most able-bodied person who was sitting in the designated "senior/pregnant/disabled" seating. I gladly stood so that the woman could sit & she appreciated that, but what kind of world do we live in where good deeds & polite behavior goes un-noticed & the kids today are being raised as disrespectful little twits who don't even show their parents any gratitude let alone anyone else.

It's sad!

I join with you in praising and thanking God because you are a normal person. You are not disabled and so forth. Take a brief pause: imagine a pregnant lady standing on the bus. Isn't she in danger of falling if the bus is running fast? What would happen if she falls accidentally even within the bus itself? The consequence might be - she is hurt and even the baby in her womb is victimized. The same thing with the old or disabled! They are weak and not stable. Yes, respect for persons like these is just right and due, dear friend!

I'm 18 years old, and from my younger point of view it makes my blood boil, too. Lots of people, young and old, these days are not very polite anymore.

If you are on the bus and someone needs the seat more than you, you give it to them. If someone is coming, you hold the door for them. Etc, etc. It's all common courtesy ... people just need to relearn it, I think.

But it drives me crazy, too. I will go out of my way to do something for someone and I get such shocked looks because so few people will even do something nice for someone if it's EASY.

Kate when I was younger that is what my father always told me to do. Stand up for women and the elderly. Refer to elders as "Sir" and "Mame."
I see the young "Snots" with their hats on in church and public places!
My daughter is 12 and she is being raised right! Respect is the number thing.

I agree. The overwhelming majority of young people today are just plain rude and selfish. Every day common courtesy is dying fast, and we are suffering because of it.

Yes, respect has gone down hill. I blame the parents of these youths. It has nothing to do with being cool. Their parents have just taught them that they are the center of the universe and not to be troubled by anyone else.

Rest assured my child does have respect for his elders and has been taught manners. He makes me proud, always opening doors for people, and always "please and thank you".

I see this all the time. I blame parents for failing their children in this area.
