First day of last menstrual period = day one of pregnancy (even though you haven't even conceived yet!)

Around 2 weeks after the first day of your last menstrual period = conception (already 2 weeks pregnant!)

Around 4 weeks after the first day of your last menstrual period = period is due - you notice that you missed it and discover you're pregnant - already 4 weeks along!

And so on and so forth. It's confusing, but the weeks of pregnancy do not start at conception or implantation. They start at the first day of your last normal menstrual period

Doctors tend to base your pregnancy dates on the first day of your LMP. The idea is that the "standard" cycle is 28 days long and ovulation occurs on Day 14.

However, many women do NOT have a "standard" cycle, even if the cycle is a standard length. How far along you are depends on when you actually ovulated. Conception can only occur when you ovulate. Therefore, if you ovulated later, your EDD could be off.

For examle, I have had a few very long cycles. If I were to count the LMP in figuring an EDD for a child conceived in those cycles, I could have been off a couple of weeks to a month! I'm sure you can imagine the problems that can cause w/ docs pushing for indcutions for going "overdue" or worrying about "small size for gestaional age" etc.

Anyway, if you don't know when you ovulated, going by your LMP is about the only way aside from an early u/s that you have of dating your pregnancy. If you tend to have regular cycles and they are not usually longer than 35 days or so, you can reasonably use your LMP to calculate EDD. If you have long or irregular cycles, it's much harder to determine. If your last LMP was 8/8/06, you would have likely conceived 2 weeks or more after that date. Most likely in August.

If your LMP was 8/8/06 then that is the conception date your doctor is using.
