It's pretty fascinating isn't it? But did you also know that educationalists have proved that children, when learning to read, don't need to understand every word in a sentence to make sense of it? I once went on a course where we were given a paragraph containing totally made-up words in among the normal ones. Then we were asked to do a comprehension exercise on the paragraph. Although we knew many of the words were ridiculous, we were still able to answer all the questions correctly. It was kind of fun, actually!
Also small children need to see plain font in order to read. Fancy lettering will throw them completely.

Yes it does matter what order the letters are in, it is just that the mind is a wonderful thing and is able to provide alternate meanings for each bunch of letters and allow you to pick a most probable solution. Good of you to propagate the myth.
