Most people will tell you Nissan, chevy, toyota, or honda
because they own one or own one before. It all depends on how a person maintain their cars. People dislike ford but I have a friend who has a 89 ford astro van that went for 345,000 miles on the original tranny and engine. But it's only one in a million. You can not find a good use car unless you are the only owner and you took really good care of it.
But for me, Toyota could take the most beating and still run strong.
Do some research and read some consumer reviews.

toyota and lexus (also a toyota brand) have been at the top of the reliability surveys for more than a decade now.
Hondas are reliable, but toyotas are still #1 by a decent margin.
and dont listen to individuals saying they had good luck with one car. that means abosultely nothing statistically.
and GM may win in initial quality, but initial quality is the most worthless measurement in history. It measures when stuff shouldnt go wrong anyways, like in the first 30,000 miles. Long term durability is where real reliability is measured, at the 100k, 150k, 200k marks and beyond.

Toyota generally holds that title, with Honda close behind.
Cadillac, Lexus (which is a Toyota brand), and Acura (which is a Honda brand) generally are considered reliable.
www.edmunds.com has info from JDPower on long term reliability. I use that a lot when looking for a car.

You are asking for RELIABILITY..... Toyota's are the most reliable cars on the market and Honda and Nissan comes close. But Toyota also use high quality material in their interior and exterior. Nissans and Hondas are mediocre quality, unless you are buying Infiniti or Acura.

You're going to get lots of the Toyota and Honda people, but last Summer JD Powers ranked GM best overall in initial quality, they offer a better warranty, and offer more cars that get 30+ mpg than any other manyfacturer.
Personally, I'm a pontiac man. But that said, it's hard to buy a bad car anymore.

Dont believe the people that tell you GM. They are just repeating what thier daddies told them. GM Was good up until 1985 then the imports took over as most reliable.
The electronics in the GM's are built in Japan, do you really believe that Japan is going to send GM the best electronics?? Remeber the late 80-early 90's models of chevy...........the check engine light was always on.......thanks to the Japanese LOL

You can't go wrong with Toyota or Honda. Most Japanese makes are great in reliability and durability except Mitsubishi.

my uncle's 1993 cadillac allante is a great car and is driving well with over 350k miles on it.
my dad bought me a 1987 chevrolet k30 (putting a cummins inside very soon) w/ 700k on it and you can tell the engine needs a little maintanance and a tune-up, but after that i wouldn't be afraid to drive it to kansas (from CA).
