St. John's Wort is helpful to some people.
There's also 5HTP (5-hydroxy tryptophan), which is essentially a purified form of tryptophan, which is the stuff in turkey that makes you feel so sleepy and happy on Thanksgiving. My chiro told me to take several a day, and while I'm not a big fan of herbal remedies, I noticed it did take the edge off my grief so that I could mourn, and then heal, properly.

These aren't necessarily cheaper than prescription medication, but you can find them at your local health food store or Chinese herbal store.

Also, start taking a brisk walk every day. Mild exercise releases endorphins to perk up your mood. Walking doesn't require the commitment or energy of running, and it's free.

Sex is a good one too, but can backfire if you are unsafe about it or if it creates complicated feelings between you and your partner - going solo might be a more satisfactory option.

Don't binge eat or cram yourself with unhealthy food, but do treat yourself to one good comforting meal or treat each day - one piece of fancy chocolate for dessert each day will give you more "happy" than several large generic candy bars.

Also, seek support. Spend more time with the friends or family members who make you feel good. You don't even have to talk about your problems, just spend more time in their presence. The best support, of course, is a pet - having a cat or dog to cuddle and pet and look after and distract you is the best cure for any depression.

Good luck, stay strong.

It's hard to suggest something because things are so different in different peoples' bodies. I have had depression for six years on and off and I've found Celexa has helped me. Nevertheless, others use St. Johns Wort or Sam-e for depression. I think one of the best medicines is endorphins, brought out by exercise, laughter and yes, even sex. Easier with exercise though. Good luck. Let me know if you have any other information you need.

Depression ranks as the most common mood disorder in America, affecting literally tens of millions of people. It sucks the joy out of life and creates untold personal suffering, not to mention the billions of dollars it costs our economy in lost productivity. In addition, depression often occurs in tandem with other diseases – such as heart disease and cancer – making them worse and complicating their treatment.

Because depression is so common, drug companies have developed a wide variety of mood enhancers to combat this problem. Basically there are two ways to improve your mood through chemistry:

1. You can supply the chemicals your brain is lacking; or
2. You can supply the raw materials your body needs to create those substances.

Even without an explanation, the second option is obviously the better way to go. Unfortunately, most depression medication on the market today is of the first variety. It is true that these drugs may make you feel better, but they are often accompanied by unpleasant side effects because it is difficult to deliver the exact amount of the substance your body needs in a fixed dosage regimen. Supplying your body with a foreign substance eventually causes the organs that normally supply that substance to become idle because they no longer need to work. Of course, when organs, muscles or bones are idle, they atrophy, and when this happens, you must either increase the dosage or change to a stronger medication. And that is generally what happens when depression is treated with the first option.

Treating depression with the second option – by supplying your organs the raw materials they need – makes your organs stronger and healthier.

"At-Ease" is just such a treatment. It is an herbal supplement made with Oriental and American Indian herbs that both nourish your organs and supply them with the necessary raw materials. When your organs have the right raw materials, they naturally create healthy brain chemistry that results in a happy mood. We have used "At-Ease" for years with great success and without problems. In fact, "At-Ease" works so well that most people feel better than when they were using chemical medication alone. "At-Ease" does not contain St. Johns wort, valerian root or melatonin, which are closer in chemical mechanism to the first option and do not work nearly as well and end up weakening the body.

Over a period of five years numerous people have clinically proven "At-Ease" to be non-toxic and with no side effects. This formula works well for ADHD, Anxiety, Phobias and Stress.

Dear Dr. Park,

Thank you for your inquiry. I want to take this opportunity to tell you how At Ease has changed my life.

I am a 67 year old male, in excellent physical condition (although I do have CLL, Chronic Lymphositic Leukemia, which is not affecting me in any way at this time).

I have, however been bothered by periods of depression the past several years. I have been unable to truly describe my depression, other than to say that is similar to extreme pain and all you want is for it to somehow stop. I'm sure you undertsand how dangerous that can be to a person.

I have considered some of the anti depressant medicines, but the side effects (easily found by researching the internet) are so bad that I turned away from them.

I was in a deep depression when my wife found At Ease on the internet after she searched for herbal remedies for depression. It sounded so good that I had to try it. You shipped it to me and the product arrived in 2 days.

You said it would make a difference within 3 days. I noticed a strange feeling the first day, but had to wait the 3 days for real results. On the 3rd day, I realized that my depression was letting up. The 4th day it was dramatically better.

Each day after that I felt better and better. It's now been about 2 weeks and my depression is completely gone. I am now living my life with happiness and vigor.

I haven't noticed any bad side effects. I have more energy and look forward to each day now.

Your website said that 6 months should be enough time to completely arrive at stability. I will be reordering soon and plan to use At Ease for the 6 months, then have some available in case of a relapse.

Thank you for this product.

First, off, go with the Bvitamins. Doctors have been known to treat severe cases of depression with them. Calcium and magnesium are good minerals. Ginseng and gingko biloba increase blood flow to the brain, and St John's Wort is an excellent choice as a natural antidepressant.

As others have said 5-HTP, exercise, a healthy diet. etc. Get enought rest! Go for long walks, get oxygen in your body. Learn yoga. Many people don't realize but emotions are held in our bodies. Yoga releases tension and gets the energy flowing. Meditation trains us to focus our minds and eventually choose healthy thought patterns. And it helps us 'ride the wave' of emotions that arise. That is we don't try to stop them, just let them work their way out, we need to get out of the way as it were. Pharmaceutical companies and the doctors they support are trying to turn normal life experiences into diseases that need medication. I'd submit that perhaps for some people, not being able to afford pills is a blessing in disguise.
Learn deep breathing techniques. See if you can get something spiritual going.
There's a great book called 'There's Nothing Wrong With You' by Cheri Huber.

If you are taking anti-depressants (which work to elevate seratonin levels in your brain), and they are not enough--you are still not feeling happy, content, or at peace, you may have low beta-endorphins (BEs). Aim for a gentle increase in BEs and your feeling of well-being will be less dramatic, but longer lasting.
