As far as safty is concerned Ive never heard of anybody getting seriously injured from the amount of heat a laptop has put out. If it starts getting too warm just move it. Although putting a laptop on your lap, bed, or other soft surfaces could restrict airflow that would cause the laptop to overheat and shutdown. As far as durability goes, it all depends. If your constantly dropping it, tossing it in the car in the morning when you leave your house, you can expect things to come loose or possibly break. Think of it like the difference between a cell phone and a cordless house phone, cell phones wear out faster than the cordless ones, because people normally take them with them everywhere they go. Not because they are carless with them, but just normal everyday wear and tear.
The only advantage to having a laptop is the portabilty aspect. Which is a definite major plus. But with that comes the downfalls, LCD screns are easily cracked, higher hard drive failure rates, along with the need to have to replace batteries, not to mention AC adapters going missing and things of that nature.
I know it sounds like Im trying to ward you off of buying a laptop. Im not trying to. Im just trying to inform you of the things I have seen since I started working on them.
Although if portability is what you are seeking then laptops are the only way to go. And to be quite honest the HP are some of the more reliable ones I have worked on and the customer service is quite good (I have also worked on Dells, Toshibas, Panasonics, and IBM's). But whichever you choose make sure it has a warranty and if you have the option of an extended warraty take it and use it for all its worth, even for small problems that you "can live with".
I hope this helps.

Doctors have issued a woning for all man who use laptops wile on their laps. Laptops could effect mail reproduction etc.,
This was announced last year. Also, if you take precaution and don't drop the laptop, block the laptops air vents, it should run you anywhere from 2 - 4 years. Recommend not to get HP or Compaq, because they are the same company and they both have a problem call the cheep creak. In a sense, your rem may overload forcing you to have to unplug it and plug it back in. Try a Dell, Sony, Alianware, Toshiba. In that order.

a laptop has got vents underneath so putting it on your lap would block them and the computer would start to run hot but the heat produced is not enough to burn you although there is the danger of a battery exploding but that's a very rare occurrence , as for durable they are although the screen is easily damaged if you're not careful the performance generally is equal to a desktop computer of equal specification's but a desktop computer can be upgraded a lot more easily and cheaper then a laptop

actually for what you can get a laptop would cost more in terms of cost\performance. and the only reason why you would'nt use a laptop on your lap is because the laptop might overheat a little bit, no danger to you.

You can purchase a small stand for the laptop so you don't burn yourself. They get really hot!
