They were not created until 1966. Old books will not have them. If the book is new and does not have one, then it is not registered with the International Standard Book Number.

The ISBN stands for the 'International Standard Book Number', by which people may order the book. Before 01/01/2007 the book had nine numbers, after 01/01/2007 the number was increased to thirteen numbers. Some books have the nine diget number and the thirteen diget numbers recorded on the books. The ones that do not have the numbers are probably the ones that were self published.

I agree with the first post, but also a lot of privately published books don't have them either. Also, not all imported books.
