It really depends on the vitamin. Taking a multi vitamin is a great idea because most people in North America simply don't get enough vitamins from their diet. Study after study shows that we don't eat enough fruits and veggies and this is where a multivitamin can help.
Be weary of other more specific vitamins. For instance, a single cup of Orange Juice can supply you with 100% of your daily recommended intake of Vitamin C. Thus purchasing a vitamin C supplement would be a waste of time.
Other vitamins such as a fish oil supplement, might be beneficial, especially if you don't like fish. These tablets contain Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids that have been shown in studies to improve heart health. Be careful with these though to store them in cool, dark places. If left out in the heat, they can go bad, and smell and taste horrible! Some taste better than others.
As for why doctors don't endorse usage. The simple answer is because most vitamins are a waste of time and some can even be dangerous. Most people (except for vegitarians) consume enough Iron and Lead in their diets for instance. Taking a vitamin with Iron or Lead, or worse yet, one designed specifically with those ingredients can be dangerous, and lead to health concerns such as some cancers. Also as already mentioned a Vitamin C supplement would be a waste of time for most people, thus a doctor would be wise not to endorse it.
In summary, a multivitamin is a great idea for anyone who knows they do not get their recommended servings of fruits and veggies (even though getting the vitamins from food would be better). Be weary though of vitamins that contain only one specific vitamin (Vitamin C, etc), and ask your doctor if you are unsure what certain vitamins do for your body.

Vitamins boost your immunity system and give you energy. Doctors don't support anything that makes you healthier, they like you when you are sick.

i take flax seed
vitamin c
calcium
and a multi vitamin
and no they aren't all the same
they have helped w/ my allergies and I rarely get sick anymore
