...Which killed 2 people, Alf, injured many over a coastal stretch of more than 500 km and put many coastal ventures out of business. What is a tsunami? According to www.askoxford.com it's "a long high sea wave caused by an earthquake or other disturbance". This it was. Quite a number of them, eminating from swells of up to 10m. According to the original Japanese, it is a "harbour wave". Gale force winds ("disturbances") at the Durban harbour entrance and these huge waves caused the harbour to close. The strong winds in conjunction with the fact that the moon is currently exceptionally close to the earth, caused these waves.

Here's another link to more photos:

We do not normally have these weather conditions in Durban.
The waves were visible from quite a distance away.
I know of some people who had to evacuate their homes and stay with relatives. Even the thunderstorm preceding the micro-tsunami was quite intense.

My dad said he saw quite a few on news24. Anyways, thanks Diezel, i'll take a look. Man, and my grandparents live right on the beachfront. I hope they're still fine. I can't believe the Wimpy was washed out. That was like my favourite place to go!

Agh Diesel, Sweetness,

don't you know a spring/autumn tide when you see one?

What was the moon doing, it has an enormous pull on the oceans and when it is full tides are highest. couple that with a bit of an off shore wind and Bob's your uncle.

Tsunami? A huge overly theatrical decription of a few high waves that came ashore.

Vango - News 24 decribes the conditions as "high surf" and 1 person killed who happened to be homeless living in the bush alongside the beach at Margate. The word "tsunami" conjures up pictures of what happened a few years back and it was way,way short of that. The cause was not an earthquake but a natural occurrence and whilst nobody wants to see life lost and damage to property the word "tsunami" is a gross exaggeration of what took place.
