I've gotten different answers from different sources. One site defines it as electromagnetism. I find this hard to believe.

chi is really air or kong qi pronounced as khong chi. but in chinese it also means the energy inside us. this energy is very known to the chinese whenever you write chinese calligraphy using a chinese brush and ink. it is not like painting. but the chinese believe that if you have enough chi within you, you can write good with the brush. unlike painting, chinese calligraphy or chinese painting are often drawn with just a brushstroke per line. there is no going back for a retouch, because any retouches can be seen when the ink is dried.

in fengshui, chi is the energy that the elements emits to enhance our lives. western people like to draw up explanations behind the cause and effect of fengshui. thus, they came up with electromagnetic fields, etc. but fengshui is more than that. i do not think that science can explain fengshui. because i have taken some courses regarding fengshui and each one of the fengshui formulas have their own systems and calculations.

ch'i is harmony. It's more a feeling than an exactness. For example, once you have elements in proper place, you will sense a feeling of harmony and completeness. There are so many variations to feng shui that it's difficult to say exactly what will bring ch'i, but you will know it when you have it.

Chi is an abstract term. Literally, it can mean air movement.

In fact, chi is kind of energy.

Like the magnetic field or the electric current that we cannot see but they are present.

If the chi is positive to you, it is like the electric current than can light up the light bulb.

If the chi is against you, it is like the electric current than can shock you or worse.
