From personal experience, when it comes to pet health, big animal lovers (like myself) will do whatever we can to protect our pets, and get them better if they're sick, etc. So, yes I do believe that Americans spend a lot on pet medicines, special diet food & supplies that are necessary because the pets are part of the family.
Now if you're referring to things that are not important (like how celebrities buy million dollar collars or outfits) for (their)pets then yes, I would say some people do go overboard. But I guess when money is not an issue then a person can spend theirs however they please.

I don't think Americans spend too much on their pets. In fact I don't think some spend enough. I see on here all the time people asking things like "my dog has bloody stool, isn't eating or drinking but I can't afford to take him to the vet. What do I do?". It makes me so angry. When you have a pet, you take on the reponsibility of providing good food, clean water, a safe environment and proper medical attention. If you can't afford that, then don't get a pet. It's selfish.

Now granted some people go overboard and but jewel encrusted collars etc., but I guess if you have it, then why not? At least they aren't neglecting their pets

Dear Gaby, I don't think it is only Americans. My friends from Italy do the same for their pets. I have always thought that if you are going to have a pet, then you need to take the responsibility for it. That means making sure it gets good food, plenty of exercise, medical attention when the need arises, and plenty of love. Otherwise, why have a pet? Maybe Americans take this responsibility seriously, as well they should. Why do you ask by the way?

I saw an article in my local paper ( San Antonio Express News) Baby Boomers spend a lot of money on their pets. (due to high incomes, no children in the homes, ) That's also the reason for the high fees by vets and and Pharmaceutical companies.

I read somewhere that in 10 years you will end up spending around $6000 on a dog.

Yes. It is absolutely insane what Americans will spend their money on. They should try helping the homeless or donating some of their money instead of wasting it away.
