My friend has msn messenger with a hotmail account, i have it with a yahoo account - can we send eachother instant messages?

Yes, u can or what u can also do is dl one of the program that allows to use all those program .. ie msn, yahoo, icq etc. There is such a program. Just google it.

why not try with yahoo latest messenger version and add your contact of msn users into the yahoo messengers list , same u Can do with msn messenger with yahoo clients msn messenger 8.1 version It's a Miltie platform environment

Yes, the latest version of Yahoo! IM can send to MSN... just add them to your list.

You just have to add the whole email address to your yahoo messenger. So go add your friend and you can chat with them. I can chat with my friend at hotmail everyday using my IM with yahoo.com.

Yes just place your friend on your buddy list (or whatever they are calling it these days). I haven't chatted for awhile but see notices that they are now interchangeable. Have fun.
