Jim Morrison was a deep thinking guy in many senses. The moody blues were pretty "cerebral" also. Here's a quote from Nights in White Satin:

Breathe deep the gathering gloom.
Watchlights fade by the light of the moon.
Bedsitter people sit back and lament.
Lonely man cries for love he has spent.
Cold-hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colours from our sight.
Red is grey and yellow white
But we decide which is right...
And which is an illusion.

That's way out there, and it was all set to orchestrated music.

Jim Morrison was a pretty cerebral guy -- for a rocker on drugs. Same with John Lennon. I have to agree that as a band, maybe the most cerebral music/lyrics came from the Moody Blues. In the 60s a lot of bands were "mental," few were "cerebral." :)

I think The Doors (Especially Jim Morrison) were too stoned most of the time to be considered cerebral. Look more in the direction of the Beatles and The Who for bands who really thought about what they were doing.

I wouldn't think so. I feel like a lot of their stuff was contrived so people would think it was cerebral. I'd say Dylan's song writing has to be up there, although I don't like him as a performer.

If the Doors are cerebral, I think you would have to mention The Grateful Dead who could be, in my opinion, just as cerebral but had a lot more diversity in musical styles.

All that said, I love the Doors.

yes i do, the doors were very important to the sixties in music i totally agree! i am a huge fan of the doors and i think all their songs are excellent - i mean they invented an original type of music, at that time there weren't any other bands with poetic lyrics and a deep voice like jim's and an organ sound. i love their psychadelic sound, it just gives me chills! hehe... but it's true that the beatles were also quite a phenomenon, but for me the doors are way better!

Would personally go for Pink Floyd (for the all time most cerebral band)
As for the 60's? yeap .... Mr. Mojo Risin' n his boys (The Doors) were awesome.

Nah, they weren't. I can think of a lot more bands/singers that made you think more. Jim Morrison was just a screwed up druggie, and although I do like a lot of Doors stuff, I do tend to think they were over-rated.

Yeah I think they were one of the most cerebral. Also Traffic & Youngbloods too, try those.

They were so cerebral that they figured they could kill off the excess brain cells.
