I'm looking to take a nice scenic road trip from Chicago to California and back possibly this summer. I want to go through the northern states to Cali then travel to Southern Cali and work my way back through the Southern States. I want it to be a scenic roadtrip with cool stops along the way. I am looking to find a possible route that has already been made. I don't want anything generic though with just major destinations. I would like off the beaten path type of stuff. Cool towns, interesting and sometimes wierd landmarks, that kind of stuff. Anyone know where I can get such a map, whether it be from a book or website? I would like it to be pre-made if that's possible.

Its simple, go south of chicago and take hwy 80 all the way to California. Highway 80 crosses the great planes, the riookies mountains of wyoming and northern utah, the great basin in nevada, the scenic sierras near Reno/Lake Tahoe, the historic gold country & river delta near Sacramento, down to the bay area and it ends in San Francisco.

Then there are many ways to get home. There are many ways to get to Los Angeles. You could either go along one of the prettiest highways in the USA on CA hwy 1 (it is much slower than the 2 other alternatives but much nicer than any of them, going along the coast and big sur the whole way). Or you could go from S.F. to L.A. by taking I-5 (via the east bay), that route is boring but it gets you there the fastest. 101 is a combination of the two.

Once you are in LA, take I-10 to Laplace, Lousiana and take I-55 back up through the south until you arrive back in chicago.
