It should be fine but you could try putting on some savlon type stuff. Check with the vet first though and also try holding ice to it, if the puppy will let you!!! :D

One of our doberman's got bit 3 times in the face and neck by a pygmy rattler (more vicious than a rattler). It was touch and go for a while, but she pulled through it just fine.
So, it is not impossible that it was a copperhead or cottonmouth.
Usually the big danger of serious affected is determined by where the dog was bitten. If bitten on the foot or leg, even though urgent, the reaction will not be as severe as if bitten in the face or neck. A neck or face bite immediately affect the throat.

I'm sure it wasn't a copperhead or a cotton mouth or it would have killed your dog .Many people don't realize it but there are many kinds of water snakes .Although they are not poisonous some have a very infectious bite .I had a dog that got a large abscess on her stomach .I took her to a vet and he told me it was from a water snake bite he laced it and gave me antibiotics for her .He also told me that in early time probably more people died from snake bites of this type as poisonous kinds .As these types of snakes live in stagnate back water where every kind of bacterial disease thrives ,so when they bite some thing even though not poise nous the bite if usually very infectious that might cause a person to suffer for months before dieing from infection before antibiotics were available . My dog recovered OK ,but I was surprised to find that several months later the same place again got infected from the bite and i had to again give her antibiotics

if the swelling is going down you are probably out of the woods , my beagle got bit on the nose by a diamond back rattler about 6 feet long . the dogs head got swollen up huge and it ran away about 2 weeks later it came back covered in mud and much reduced swelling. and the dog was fine, except his nose didn't work for tracking anymore. I assume he buried himself in the mud because of the bite, but never heard any other dogs doing that. Copperheads are not that bad of a snake tho. GHEESH a friend of mine was bitten about 20 times while working on his car by a brood of babies and all they did was give him a tetanus shot lol

It would have been good to take him to the vet to get some antibiotics. My lab got bit a week after we moved to Georgia and we did this --he was OK in about a week.

It sounds weird, but bathe him in hot water - the heat breaks down the protein in the venom.
