Basically I can no longer switch vents from upper to floor, mixed or defrost; the air only comes out from the upper vents not the defrost or floor vents. The A/C works and heat works just cannot switch the vent setting. Is there an easy way to fix this or am I going to have to take the console panel off? The car is an 03 pontiac sunfire.

about 75% of the time this is caused by a vaccum line being disconnected. find the vaccum line and reconnect it. if it is not the vaccum line you need to check the vaccum dashpots that open and close the doors to direct the air flow. if they work OK then check the control switch which is the least likely to be bad.

i own a shop ,and what is needed for that one to repair it is a new inside control unit, for it,that section there that you control it from has went bad,if i was you id go to a good junk yard and get a good used one from a wrecked car,it will be as good as a new one,and a whole lot cheaper in price also, installing this only takes about 45 minutes to do,and then everything will work right again,i have had plenty of those in working on them, and there easy to repair, good luck i hope this helps.

Your cable might be broken or might have become detached.

But to answer your question...probably. Pick up this Chiltons Repair Manual DVD which includes a complete manual for for you Sunfire. It should give you step by step instructions oh how to troubleshoot and eventually correct your problem

The vent control switch is probably defective. You will need to remove and replace.

PS.. dont bother with the fan belt idea.

good luck........

Your control mechanism might be broken inside. You will need to remove the whole assembly and take a look at it. More than likely you will need to replacer it.

This is just a long shot, but check your fan belts. It's a small thing, but it's cheap to fix. Take care!
