It is hard to say without seeing the fire, the metal clip may be part of the igniton generator which makes your spark. It is definately advisable to get an engineer in to look at it. There should be a white lead going from the position of you pilot back to the gas valve on the right hand side of the fire check this is not damaged and is connected both ends. If when you turn the handle you don t get an audible click then the black generator itself may not be working on the long metal tube from the gas handle has become loose.

You can still light the gas fire with a match until it is fixed.
