That is a very old term from the "Beat nicks" of the 1950's. They reffered to people as "Cats" when they didn't like really know a persons name such as, "Man that Cat on the drums was bopping last night." "Did you see that Cat fall off the stage last night?" "That Cat is cool as a cucumber."
It is referring to someone like when we call someone dude, dawg, homeboy or stuff like that.

It's a compliment. Cats are cool and aloof. Not easily distracted and do their own thing.

I think it has to do with the 50's. I remember my aunt telling me that girls were called "Cat" 'cause they were stylish and catty with their cat glasses and reserved attitude. Boys were called "Daddio" 'cause they were the boss.

minx- beautiful, stunning girl
dog- ugly girl
cow - ugly fat girl
hog- fat girl who eats alot
pig- eats alot
