my husband wrote me a poem, 38 years ago. i still have it.
it isn't very long, only a couple of verses, but he speaks from the heart and most of it rhymes and i treasure it still.
i know many women want sparkly, expensive things, even our circle of friends get a charge out of the two of us being satisfied with simple things. it works for us. and whenever he is away i have my poem to remind me of why he loves me.
good luck with your birthday ideas and come home safe!
tess
AND in case you haven't been told today........i for one am grateful to our military for keeping our world safe. whether you are a down under soldier or some other country's soldier, take good care, and keep your head down!
:)

He showed up at my apartment, stood on my patio, knocked on the door, with cake (lit candles) in hand, he stood there and sang Happy Birthday to me. he was a good friend but i tell you it meant the world to me. He came in and we ate cake and ice cream, then he took me to a movie. That has to of been my most romantic birthday ever. Surprises are always good. Make an effort that you have never made before. Like being home before her dressed to go out, with roses, and a card. Or I have seen this before, depending on how daring you are. A lady at work, her husband showed up dressed all nice with roses and red her a love poem. She left early. The next day she had a permanent smile on her face. He took her to their favorite restaurnt for dinner and gave her jewlery. They ate dessert first. lol. Cake of course. They had a romantic dinner and well, he got husband of the year award for sure.

Well for me I am not married, but the best gift i had on my birthday was someone I knew sang happy birthday to me in front of the public, and everyone stood and watched and joined in, I felt like the most specail person in the world, so much because not even my own family did that.

The bestest thing he ever did was to get up BEFORE me (a rarity), make coffee, English muffins, eggs and sausage and bring it all to me in bed and woke me up with a kiss on my ear, a white rose in my hand and the smell of the most delicious meal I have ever eaten. What we did AFTER breakfast was pretty fantastic, too and I am over 60 yrs old!!!

I agree with Elena but I would also add a singing telegram..you know..some guy dressed up in a tux to sing Happy Birthday to her..I guarantee she will cry her eyes out with happiness!!..and then when you call her..have your whole troop around and you all sing Happy Birthday to her again..It will be a birthday she will NEVER forget!!

My fiancee bought a dozen long stem red roses and two shopping sprees to my favorite stores while he was in Iraq and missed my birthday. Don't forget to call her on her birthday too.

This may sound silly, but there is one (1) thing that only the two (2) of you secretly love together. My suggestion is to do what-ever that is, and it will make her happy, inside!

consider the time difference and get ya local florist to send her flowers,,, try to co ordinate with the florist... get on the phone with ya wife and somewhere during the conversation, the florist turns up at the with the flowers you sent... its a sweet way of saying you miss her and wanna be with her at that moment...

Set up a camcorder and tape a message to her. Tell her what she means to you, how you're looking forward to coming home to her, that you never want to spend another birthday (or any occasion without her), and that she's "your world". Take my word for it, she'll treasure this for LIFE!!!
My husband sent tapes to me when he was in Viet Nam and I have those "treasures" today.
