It is the result of a merger of Alkmaar '54 and FC Zaanstreek. In the Netherlands the club is known as AZ, but internationally Alkmaar is often (incorrectly) added.

AZ Alkmaar of NETHERLANDS was formed on 10 May 1967 as AZ '67, the result of a merger of Alkmaar '54 and FC Zaanstreek.
