i started a new tank yesterday, and awoke to foam heaven. it is not coming over the top of the tank. it's a 5 gallon bow front tank. i used the water treatment that came with it, it's called aqua safe. the directions are as followed. it said to use 1 tsp for every 10 gallons, so i put in a 1/2 tsp. i smelled the filter and it kinda smells like old beer that has sat for a day or two. is there anyway i can get ride of the foam, or is it safe to put in fish? thank you

Old beer smell screams yeast and ammonia. It sounds like there was something organic in the tank that somehow got missed during the cleaning and set up. I would suggest you remove about 1/2 the water and wash off the filter materials and let it run for a day or so before you do anything else. If it is still making more foam, rewash everything yet again.

Even though some others may have been joking, do make sure there isn't anyone around that might have messed with you or accidentally put something in the tank. Can a pet get to the tank to drink out of it for example?

If all else fails, return it for another set up.

I'm not certain what caused the foam. Sounds as if the filter may have had something in it or there was something in the tank. As others have mentioned, don't add fish yet I would suggest a fishless cycle and there is a link below that details how to do one.

And I'm sure the first respondent was just leaving a smarta** answer but actually, peeing in the tank would provide a source of ammonia to start a fishless cycle and although it sounds disgusting and urine may contain things that you don't want in your tank like sugar, it would actually work.

Usually you should allow a tank to run for 2 weeks to acquire a proper biological system before introducing fish. Did you wash the tank before setting it up and did you rinse the filter cartridge? I think you should give it time to settle down before getting fish.

You should let a tank run for 2 weeks before adding any fish in.

Foam is a protein matrix. Sounds like you have protein from some source in your tank (could just be fish waste). Just replace the water.

the water desires to be replace yet in basic terms 0.5 the way not all because you will kill the forged algae to your fishes in turn they'll likely die . you could desire to get a sparkling motor to your filter out this is the reason being making that noise the quicker the extra useful
