Network device used to route IP packets to the correct destination computer or network device over the Internet or within an intranet. Routers contain IP tables which are used to direct packets along the next leg of a route so that they can reach a specific destination.

a router will allow you to access the internet wirelessly, yet still having the capability of using wires. For example the nintendo Wii uses a router to access the net, just like PSP and NDS, but you could link a X360 to it through a cable

In other words router is a hardware device that acts as a traffic light/police traffic that control the flows of traffic/data within the network to its destinations. Without these device it surely leads to traffic congestion within the network..It's like when you're on the road driving..

It "routes" packets of data. i.e. it tells them where to go.
You need one if you have more than two computers on a network, so they don't get confused as to who's data is who's and where it is supposed to be going.
