I can to a certain extent accept religious tolerance - BUT things have gotten out of control. Like someone said - immigration is assimilation.

99.9% of Americans are descended of immigrant ancestors - yet we speak English, adhere to American laws, pay American taxes, and we ARE Americans.
If you want to come here - fine, then do it legally - pay your damn taxes like the rest of us and stop asking us to bend over backwards to accomodate the crap you did in the your previous country. If the previous country is so great here's a suggestion - GO BACK! Tada - problem solved.

Just because people have ruined their own country and do not feel like fixing it is not reason we should let them come here and ruin ours.

Somalis Ruining Minnesota

I live in Minnesota and yes, there is a large Somali population here. I'm not sure how it originated but I know Minnesota has the largest Somali population outside of Somalia. I read the article about handling pork products in Target stores. I guess I have to respect their religion but if they won't handle any pork, they shouldn't be placed in a position nor should they accept a position that would require it. I guess if I was buying some pork chops, I wouldn't care if they had someone else scan it. What's the big deal? I have a lot of respect for the Somali people despite some of the culture clashes. Most of them are refugees that are just looking for a better life. I had worked for several years with several Somalis and they were some of the nicest, hardest-working people I have ever known. They never complained and were just happy to have escaped the violence in their country.

As far as the Khat plant goes, as far as I know it is illegal but they argue that it is part of their religion. Not sure how I feel about that. If I want to smoke pot, can I argue that it is part of my religion?

That's interestng who would of thought such a large populations would go to Minnesota of all places. They probably shouldn't work at Target if they don't want to handle the bacon, but they have every right to be in America (assuming they are here legally). That is why America is land of opportunity and people who don't like that should leave not the other way around.

Khat is a pretty dangerous drug, they will never be able to have the government approve that. Khat is illegal in the US.

Hmm, I think that's it.

I saw that story on FOX news yesterday too. I grew up in MN and there is a BIG immigrant population. There are a lot of Hmong and Somalis and now Mexicans too.

I cannot imagine anyone allowing drugs to grow there. As far as not handling the bacon? That is ridiculous since its in a plastic sealed container.

The cab issue is interesting to me because I think as a business owner (cabs are owned by the driver) you can refuse service to anyone you want to.

Muslims are not allowed to touch/eat any swine, and pork is swine (Almost all Somalis are Muslims). As far as the drug, that is not part of Islam, but part of the bad Somalis in Somalia who were going away from the proper Islamic ways. And, it is not right to say that Somalis should be deported. They, like everyone else, excluding Native Americans, did not live here forever, does that mean we should all return to our homeland? I think it is very insensitive of all the answers that have said bad things about the Somalis.

It is just so totally wrong that they are welcomed here. I live in North Dakota and am 10 miles from the Minnesota state border.

Minnesota has very lenient laws towards social issues such as immigration. There are plenty of rich people there too, that are willing to help with charity for the recipients of these programs. Minnesota is just a more liberal state than others and their government supports it. I know of people from North Dakota who purposely move to Minnesota so they can get more in Welfare benefits.

If they want to live here they need to assimilate into our culture rather than our culture assimilating into theirs. I have heard not only of the bacon thing but also some cab drivers refuse to drive people who want to go to a liquor store or are carrying liquor. They can either do their jobs or get fired in my opinion.

Even Minnesota has enough room for everyone. Some Native American tribes grow and use peyote legally.

Instead of being fearful of newcomers, why not try to learn a little about their culture.

Except that drug is nnot an islamic thing, it is a somali thing. IMHO, they should never have been allowed to come here, and they are really wearing out their welcome fast, ship them all back to somalia.
