The unions were instrumental in bringing about the 40 hour week. Prior to that the average worker had to work 10 hours a day or more and six days a week. The union fought to bring the amount of hours down so that we could have some leisure time.

how can you make enough money to live on only working 20 hours a week unless you are making 40 to 50 dollars an hour

40 hours seriously isn't enough. I work like a billion a week. It should be like 80 a week.

im from endicott, ny, and i know endicott johnson, a shoe manufacturing plant from my hometown, was one of the first, back in the early 1910's, I believe. dont know if they were the first, though
