Is anything?
The common answer is that it instills:
health
teamwork
camaraderie
overcoming obstacles

So for the young, sure it can be "important". But spending billions of dollars a year on pro sports while children have no health insurance is not "important".

I'm not sure how important sports are but it's a good entertainment and a big money maker(especially here in the states)....

Sports can be good thing. There's nothing wrong with healthy, friendly competition. Competition for fun, not to have a winner. In the days before it became a big business and full of huge egos, sports was a way to compete and bond, and test wills and strength. Fitness, sports, can be a great outlet for kids. It can be a learning experience, it's fun. Like everything, a balance should occur with sports. It shouldn't be the end all, be all that so many people think it is.

Sports as it is today can be very ugly, and in most organized sports, it is.

Athleticism and competition I feel is a good thing...for someone that is interested in it.

What is important is that we look at why we enjoy sports. Of course, watching and playing are two different things. Do sports perpetuate the 'us vs. them' mindset, which also causes wars, including the struggle of the poorest people to simply meet their basic needs, while others literally have money to burn? Do competitions help bring people together, or to separate them? Do they make us think that we are better than others?

Sports, can be difined as any activity that requires physical exertion (football, basball, running, hiking, etc.). Sports is just another way for us to tune both our mind and our body. Pushing ourselves further than we normally go is a great way to grow; whether it is physically or mentally.

I beleieve sports are an important facet in a complete lifestyle.

Sports are necessary to maintain good physical health. Some team sports tech leadership and teamwork. All types of sports are good as long as they do not become an obsession. Professional sports should be banned. They are just another form of prostitution.

In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war...is how 2 Samuel 11 starts...

A lot of men are competitive by nature. We need to go off to war. Baseball, football, soccer, tennis, what ever your favorite is, is a way for men to vicariously "go off to war" through our favorite sport.

As for me its the NFL. And admittedly, when the super bowl trophy is handed out, I go into a depression for a couple weeks. And when it starts again, its off to war I go, and I better win...
