my roomate bought a Linksys router and when our computers are hooked up to it the internet cuts out sometimes very frequently other times maybe 1 time an hour, sometimes itll go down then refresh itself other times i need to do a power cycle to reset it. after getting very sick of this my roomate went and bought a switch (person at Staples told him to) im not sure what the purpose of this "switch" is for but the internet still stops working at random times, when i plug the net directly into my computer its very fast and doesnt cut out. yet when hooked up to my roomates comp through the router the internet goes slower and is unreliable. what could the problem be?

also i was wondering where all the bandwidth goes when our computers are connected, when i use the program Bitcomet with the net directly into my computer it downloads at 100k a second yet when we are routed i get between 5-10k a second, he claims hes not downloading very fast but i never know what to believe, but if so would a router take bandwidth away from the computer?? i think his comp is packed with spyware he doesnt seem to agree on this point wih me, i need a solution tho this is drivn me crazy we pay for expensive internet for thge speed and its not being utilized

Sounds like he might have to check the "lease" on router. Every router has a default lease time and this can cause the system to cut out. Of course as the earlier post said it could just be a bad router.

Well, you may just have a bad router, they are known to exist.
Try first to see if it is just firmware.
Go to http://linksys.com and then support.
Check you router model and see if there is a firmware update.
If there is download and install that update,
If that still doesn't fix the issue, get another router.

Dont know why some salesman would add a switch unless you needed more eithernet connections. It wont do anything more than that.

Additional Information...
Well when the connection is shared amoung more than one machine a router will do its job and route information. If both machines are in use then the available bandwidth to each of them will be reduced. If your roomate has spyware then he will be using bandwidth continously just as you do with torrent software and both will be slower. If he also has torrent software then of course you both will suffer.

His isnt set up right, u still need to download from that one disc in order to use wireless in a computer or laptop...If you did that good, now make sure all his settings are correct and you both have a good connection. Being too far and too many walls, messed up our wireless
