Post-Civil War. Post-Indian Wars. Expansion of steel industry into major war production. Worry about land rights at home and need to expand beyond accepted international boundaries. 'Gun-boat' policy in and without China and South-East Asia.
Unemployment and unrest. Push toward recognition of indigenous claims... Political upheaval. Push toward isolationism.
Does this sound familiar?
It should. Vietnam et alia.

The arguments for this statement would be that in fighting a foreign war the old wounds of the Civil War were finally healed and that foreign policy diverted attention from domestic issues. I find that unconvincing. The domestic problems which had created the political crises of the 1890s were stilled by a) the inability to put together an effective coalition to challenge the dominance of eastern industrial interests b) prosperity with the world-wide economic revival in the latter part of the decade. Imperialism was for the United States a recognition that its economy was the most dynamic in the world and that it consequentially had interests which were global in scope.
