How can we know this and we don't because we could not possibly know what a God thinks. It's hard enough to keep up with what we, ourselves really think at least some of the time. If there is a God out there and if that God is willing to show us mercy and forgiveness, that would be nice but I think, like you, I can't be sure. All we can do is learn by our mistakes, ( and perhaps not all our 'mistakes' are mistakes but learning,) and than a merciful and forgiving God will take notice and show us a little direction.

In Christianity, which to my knowledge is the only religion that offers the possiblity of God's forgiveness, God does not forgive because we confess, or anything that we do, he forgives us through His grace.

Because God is just, justice must be done in turn for our sins. Prior to Jesus earthly life and sacrifice, Jews made a blood sacrifice as a subsitution for their own sacrifice. Jesus Christ died as that payment through his death on the cross. God's perfect justice is served through his death. Jesus then becomes our judge.

When we confess our sins and claim Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we acknowledge His right to judge us, and put ourselves at His mercy. We confess our sins because we are comanded to by Jesus through the apostles and the Bible. Our confession is how we become more like Jesus, but it does not earn us forgiveness. Forgiveness is for God alone to give.

This is your homework?!?! For what class?

Please delete this question and ask it in the "religion" category.

People show each other forgiveness every day. Good people, that is.
