This is a pretty confusing issue for a lot of pregnant women. The fact is when you're in your 5th week of pregnancy, you are 4 weeks pregnant! During the week you start your period, you are in your first week of pregnancy, but you have not yet completed any weeks so you are zero weeks pregnant.

You are correct, but the way that you stated it was confusing in and of itself! Pregnancy is calculated from the first day of the LMP (last mentrual period). When your next period is due, you are 4 weeks pregnant. (The embryo itself is probably only around 2 weeks old, but that is beside the point). When your period is 2 weeks late, you are 6 weeks pregnant. By the time you miss your second period you are 8 weeks pregnant. And so on and so forth...

the reason they calculate your due date from the first day of your last period is because back in the old days ... sooo many people would calculate differently. They would calculate the first day after their last period, 5 days after their last period, etc. So, they now have a chart so that EVERYONE calculates the same exact way .. which makes it easier for your doctor to determine your due date because all people and all doctors use the same date to calculate their expected due date!
40 weeks from the first day of your last period :)

good luck! God bless!

sweetie when you are 5 weeks pregnant then in all reality you are just 3 weeks along.Because the Dr adds 2 weeks to the first day of your LMP to allow for conception and implantation.

I will listen to what my doctor says. And my doctor counts the time I am on my period and the week after that even though I had not conceived a child at that time

I wouldn't worry too much about exact calculations on this. The best bet is to wait until the first ultrasound when they do the rump/head measurement. This will be the most accurate thing you have done. The baby will come when ready -
