Obviously somebody stole my name and my address and started selling counterfeit merchandise over the internet under my name.
The intimitading letter says that they would take legal action against me, what can I do?

The advice to secure a lawyer is good advice; do it right away. If you can't afford a lawyer, you can write back to them, denying their allegations (but be careful what you write -- anything you write can be used against you....).
If you've never sold anything over the Internet, then say so and ask them for more information or proof of the claim. DO NOT give out any personal financial data (as it could be a scam). If the lawyers are legit, they will fully set forth the factual basis for their allegations, and usually won't take legal action until it appears that you're unwilling to cooperate.

Seek counsel; find out the factual basis for this claim (that might help you to locate the person who's stolen your identity).
Good luck.

you should have a lawyer review the letter, make a police report about the stolen identity thing, report to the credit bureaus that you have a identity theft (to help prevent further fraud), and if you know the company that you were supposedly selling the items through make a complaint through them.

1. Check to make sure this is not a scam (check the name of the firm with the NY bar association)
2. If they don't mane a person that would sue you then it is probalyy a scam.
3.Get a lawyer to help you.

Contact the Attorney and inquire. In order to defend yourself you first must find out what exactly the problem is. Then you can contact the site and find out who opened the account the email address and other info needed to take care of this problem. You need to contact the attorney as soon as possible because you don't want this to get out of hand.

Talk to a lawyer, that's what they are there for. You need to get copies of your credit reports also, to see what else they've done to you. Get a fraud warning notice put on all your credit reports. I doubt they will actually sue you, since they are probably aware that you don't have anything to take.....

Just because it's reportedly from a law office doesn't mean it is legitimate. It could be a scam. Have your attorney review it. Do not respond to this yourself -- do not give this company ANY personal information.

you need to get a lawyer, try and et a free consultation and tell them about your situation. Also if you think someone is using your identity check your credit report.
