The best alternative band of all time has to be Alice In Chains. It is also one of the most depressing as you can actually hear Layne Staley dying in his lyrics. Almost all the songs are about his herion addiction which eventually led him to suicide. If you can watch the MTV unplugged you can see how stoned he is and actually feel the pain when he is singing.
Another great alternative band whith a dead lead singer is obviously Nirvana. Kurt Cobain also sang aout his heroin addiction which led to his suicide.
I also enjoy Hole, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins and Janes Addiction.
All the great alternative bands made their music in the 90's. Today alternative music is just not the same, it is too Pop and mainstream to be called alternative, it has lost all meaning.
