I was coming home from work yesterday had about a quarter of a tank of petrol and my car died on me up a steep hill. luckily it was just outside work and my boss came and turned the car around and when it was parrallel it started again. there was a strong fume smell - though no problem with exhaust fumes. my car is a fiesta 1.1- perfectly fine today filled up with petrol. anyone have any ideas?

Fuel guage may not be accurate and there was less petrol in the tank that shown. Additionally, the fuel pump may be near its end and not able to cope, and this is an early warning.

There could also be some grit in the fuel injectors and the incline of the hill was sufficient for them to temporarily block the injectors.

Probably best to keep tank above a quarter full for this hill. Might be worth using some fuel and tank cleaners like Wynn's and can be bought in Halford's, etc. It might be worth the £10-12 spent, and if the problem re-occurs then you know what has been eliminated. Knowing a friendly mechanic who can do a homer will keep costs down.

Being on a hill that steep, the fuel intake was no longer in the fuel and it sucked some air, and then died since it was starved for fuel. The gas smell was only the lines filling back up and displacing the air. It should be fine. Don't go up that hill again unless you are well above a quarter tank. Great to have a boss that can help.

Always try to keep at least a quarter of a tank...otherwise things like this can happen. When on a steep hill, your fuel wasn't going to where it was supposed to...force of gravity. When the car was paralell again, it was fine because the fuel was balanced throughout the fuel lines again. My suggestion would be to keep your car with more than a quarter tank of fuel if traveling up or down steep hills.

Hi

Me thinks you need to keep your fuel tank more than quarter full if you're going to tackle steep hills or the fuel will slosh out of the way of the pick up pipe and your problem will rear its ugly head again!!
