Hi. I'm a bit of a "tried EVERYTHING" kinda girl when it comes to foundation. I have tried at least 2 foundations from every range there is. I've tried some of the most expensive and some of the cheapest.
When it comes to foundation, it is always worth splashing the cash for the most natural looking ones. You can always find great deals on e-bay, so can get a REALLY pricey foundation for far less than it should cost.
I have had many disastrous results with using shades darker than my own skin tone, I never fail to look like an oompah-loompah! I find it's ALWAYS best to find the shade most like your own tone, and then, ALWAYS a bit lighter rather than a bit darker. Remember, you can always use bronzer and Blusher to darken the areas the sun would naturally hit your face, like your forehead, cheek-bones and nose.
Now remember that it's important to blend the foundation slightly onto your neck, in order to avoid those tell-tale streaks that will just shout "I'M WEARING FOUNDATION!" lol.
I have found that the best way to apply, is to dab some on your forehead, cheeks and chin, and then spread it smoothly untill it all joins together and looks even. Apply a little more where you may need extra coverage. (I always use concealer AFTER foundation on any areas that look uneven, like to cover dark-circles and red patches)
I personally prefer to use my finger tips, but you may find a sponge works better for you. Just experiment a bit, and NEVER rush it. The key to a natural look is to spend a little time perfecting it, and try to apply it facing your window, if your using it by day, and under the lighting that will most resemble that of where you're going, by night.
Now, onto the best products. If you are young, then I would reccomend Benefit's true-story foundation, which is really sheer and natural looking. It will provide moisture to your skin and looks really fresh and glowing. It's worth that little extra.
For more mature skin, I find Chanel and Estee-Lauder do great foundations for you.
I personally find dream Matte mouse is great for a low budget, as it does cover up shiny skin really well. BUT I always find it makes your face look a little masked and unnatural, as under sunlight, you can always see that it looks a bit powdery.
My FAVOURITE foundation, is by La Prairie. However, it costs around £90... BUT it did last me about a year (which saved me a helluva lot in the lon-run) and comes in a beautiful bottle with a stand and a concealer in the lid, and a wonderful brush and sponges.
Anyway, hope this helps! And if you have the time (and confidence!) Then it is really worth going to a department store and having an expert at a make-up counter help determine the best foundation for you. They can try it on you, and give you many tips. Also, you could arrange a day out with girl friends, and go to EVERy make-up counter, till you find the PERFECT foundation!
Good luck!

Step 1 - First apply moisturizer to your face.
Step 2 - Shake the foundation bottle well. Dab some into your palm.
Step 3 - Dip in your fingers or a triangular sponge, and dot on your cheeks, your chin, your forehead, and your nose.
Step 4 - Smooth it over your face and gently blend in upward, outward motions, making sure not to forget the side of your nose, under your eyebrows, along the jaw line, blending an inch below the jaw line and chin.
Step 5 - Gently blot the face with a tissue when you are done, to soak up any excess oil. Your foundation should feel light and natural. In fact, if you can feel it at all, you have put on too much.

Hi, I too am looking for a good foundation, but what i recently discovered it that by using a foundation that was a shade lighter than what I had been wearing for a lot of years, my skin looked so much better. I looked much more natural and younger and fresher> I would follow the advice that other people have given you and go for a shade that matches your skin, that is what all makeup artists advise us to do, and then add a bit of colour with bronzer and blusher.

You should not use any foundation that are darker or orangy on your skin as it makes look false looking. The trend is natural look and for you I would use a lovely foundation that matches your skin color and then buy a beautiful bronzer, all brands make bronzers and that will give you the glowy tan look you are trying to achieve. Use sparingly because otherwise it will give that orangy effect too. Use a little blush and lipgloss, eye makeup and you will be in style and ready for summer.

going a shade lighter is far better than going a shade darker. looking like you've got none on is perfect - just the way it is supposed to be! the most beautiful women in the world wear makeup that is so flawlessly natural you would never know they were wearing any! For good coverage I use Almay, available at Boots, they're fantastic and last longer too!

How about Maybellines light reflecting foundation in a shade that matches your skintone, then sweep a bronzer over your cheeks, forehead and chin.
Revlons bronzer in Sun is fantastic, matte and light.

foundation is to make you look flawless not tanned, your best bet it to buy a moisturiser with self tan in and darken your skin this way before applying foundation. Darker shades of foundation will not blend if they dont match your skin tone.
