There is no definitive answer to this question. Roy has higher career totals but Brodeur is starting to get close to them now. Roy had 4 Stanley cups, Brodeur already 3, and will probably have more. Both brought/bring their game up a notch when it matters most.Brodeur PROBABLY had the most help in front of him, but it's not exactly like the people in front of Roy didn't know how to check.
A year ago I would have said Roy based on Career accomplishments, but today, 3/20/07, I'm going with Brodeur. Without a lot of attention being given to it, he is having one of the best seasons in the HISTORY of the game, taking an otherwise mediocre team to Stanley Cup contention. Note that unless something freaky happens he will set the record for games played, I don't even know who his backup is! (Fair enough that I couldn't tell you who most of Roy's were......)
By the way, Dryden won a Conn Smythe BEFORE his official "Rookie Year"!!!!

While it seems close I am going to say Brodeur because he has 6 seasons with over 40 wins-Roy had 40 once. Brodeur has led the league in wins I think 7 times (8 after this year?) -Roy never. Also, he will end up with close to double the amount of SO's as Roy. Brodeur will also pass the all time wins in many fewer games. Also a better GAA by more than a quarter of a goal a game so really it is not even that close.
Also, Patrick had that showboat save which he threw in his own net which cost his team a series-that knocks him down a notch IMO.
Maybe Patrick has an extra cup but I would rather have 3 cups and a gold medal over 4 cups. That is another thing- Brodeur has more international play.
Also he has like 10 or 11 straight seasons with over 35 wins. Roy has NEVER had 2 straight.

In a word Brodeur simply because when he finished his career he will be the leader in most goaltending categories and we call Gretzky the great one because he holds the most scoring records so too will Brodeur be known as the best goaltender ever because he will hold the most goaltending feats and records. Brodeur has had to play on a team all his career that although was always defensively sound also barely scored which meant every save he made meant alot more to the Devils as a team then any other goaltender and the number of one goal games he won attest to that fact. In addition without Brodeur in many years the devils would probably not even make the playoffs whereas the Avs would have made the playoffs even without Roy. Brodeur has also been overlooked for the Vezina until recently because people said its easier for him because the devils are a defensive team but look at the Avs at their height they had an awesome team of offensive stars that bailed out Roy when he got in trouble like Hejduk, Sakic, Tanguay, Forsberg and many others. Brodeur is the best all time because the numbers prove it.

Patrick Roy popularized the butterfly and allot of people keep saying how big his equipment was when he played well this are people that don't know much about this game and where never born when Patrick Roy joined the league. his goalie equipment was so small to what they even wear today way way smaller, he the great thing about Patrick Roy it wasn't his regular season stats that catches every body's eye its was his playoff performances that's what made Roy so competitive over his career.
in Brodeur's earlier day's with the Devils they became all defencive team so he had lots of help in his own end, but as you can see the Devils today which people are still saying they play that same old style of defence first well if you just look at there shots against you will see that they don't play defence like they use to back in the day. Brodeur wins allot of games for the Devils and there grateful to have such a great goalie.
my pick out of them two are even to me.
Patrick Roy my all time favourite, Brodeur yes will get the Wins record and Shot out record over Sawchuck, the thing is is they simply know how to win games and its always when it counts most the Stanley Cup playoffs.
hemitheu…>>>.LOL your funny Roy practically won it as a rookie in 86, and he won it in 93.
GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

As much as I dislike Patrick Roy, he is better then Brodeur. Not to take anything away from Brodeur but he has played his entire career on a team that plays defensively and does not give up many scoring chances. Roy played on much more offensive teams that did give up scoring chances so Roy faced more 2 on 1's and breakaways then Brodeur ever will.

Of the two, I would have to say Brodeur. Marty keeps a level head, even when he is having an off game.
Roy has a history of meltdowns. I have seen him self-destruct too many times during games. If he gives up an easy goal early it can cause him to lose control of his emotion. Get under his skin and they might as well pull him.
But I am a Nashville fan anyway. GO PREDS!!!!!!!!!!!

Patrick Roy was the best goalie I've ever seen, and I'm a Devils fan. And he's the best goalie you've ever seen, unless you're at least in your late 40s and can remember Terry Sawchuk, Jacques Plante or Glenn Hall at anything resembling their best. And I still don't think any of them was better, game in and game out, especially in the Playoffs, than Roy. But Brodeur is about two seasons from passing Roy for career wins and Sawchuk for shutouts. Ask this question again in two years, and I may answer differently.

Who is the best? It kind of depends. In their prime, at their very best, I would go with Hasek, with Dryden a close second. But when you factor in their entire careers, health, and longevity, Roy is the best... but not for long. Brodeur will likely retire as the generally accepted "best" goalie of all time.

They play very differently, so it's hard to compare. If you look at just stats, Brodeur might have an edge. Roy won a Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe in his rookie year. The only other goalie to do that was Dryden. This one is a toss up. If I have to pick one, I'll go with Roy.
