Yes of course. Just like everything else you do on the Internet. Your computer leaves a "fingerprint" on everything that orginates from it.

IMs come from a screenname its the screenname that is traced. If a person is harassing another the server company can look up that person and email them with a complaint. There are millions of IMs every second I think AOL has a number on its web site.

Only to the site that hosts the messenger but if its a criminal offense, the site can be sent a subpeona to produce the users info.

yes they are electronic media and can be read and traces just like a cell phone text message can.

if your asking im as in instant messenger then yes they can track your ip address if you dont have the settings right i would reccomend using a proxy
