My hubbie was told he had a job from a job agency (because the original person they gave it to let them down) starting the following week. So he turned down a different job because this was longer term. On ringing up to confirm his start time he was told that the person they orginally hired has not let them down and if he did they would ring my husband. Does anyone know if he can complain because now the agency are avoiding his calls because they know they were in the wrong?

In my experience Recruitment Agencies are nothing more than Lying Scumbags. You will find that the other candidate was dithering abit so they got your hubby all set up JUST IN CASE the first one dropped out. At the end of the day you are nothing more than a walking commission cheque.

I wouldn't bother complaining to them, as it will just be paraded round the office for people to laugh at you ( i know this for a fact).

I would maybe talk to the company your partner was going to work for and explain the underhand tactics their agency used and maybe they wont use them again; hit them where it hurts right in the commission cheque or maybe see if they are a member of the REC governing body (I'm assuming you are in the UK here)

their excuse will be you had nothing in writing but they don't seem to care that they messing with somebodies family and lively hood.

In most states a verbal job offer is close to a written job offer. If the company told him he had a job, that's a verbal contract. He should be able to sue them to recoup any expenses he's incurred or any income he's lost as a result of not getting that job.

Contact their head office and threaten to take it to the ombudsman who regulates employment agencies if they won't talk to you.
