I have some older wood which I made into planter boxes. I have already filled the insides with soil and compost in preparation for spring planting. Is it worth it to paint the outside of the wood, in hopes it will keep it from rotting any sooner? Or will this actually be harmful to the plants?

painting the outside only, will be purely cosmetic. in order to properly preserve wood, it needs to be sealed on all six sides. leaving even one side exposed will allow moisture to enter. you may consider drilling some weep holes in the bottom to prevent standing water.

Painting the outside of the wood should not hurt the plants since they won't be in contact with the paint from the inside. If you do paint the outside, get a water-seal type paint/stain so that it does indeed waterpoof the wood and make it less likely to rot. Just any old paint won't do the trick.

If you want to preserve the character of your salvaged wood, you can use spar varnish or any outdoor varnish on the outside of it, and if you can find them to fit, use store-bought pots or planter boxes inside to keep the wood from rotting as much. It's really the bottom that is going to rot out first, but you can keep replacing that.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.

What you should have done was seal the inside. That's where the damage starts. the outside will get sun damage, not rot.
