The other fish in the tank are fine. They are all mollies. The one starting breathing heavily last night, and today he is lying at the bottom of the tank struggling to breathe. There doesnt appear to be anything else wrong with him, no spots or rotting fins, etc. I am going to test the water quality, temp, aeration, etc. What could be wrong with him? What can I do to fix this?

You will need to put more oxygen into the tank. It could also be that he has been poisoned by something in the water. Some mollies are more resilient than others. I bought a male with pretty brown/grey/black/white(all the dull colors mized in, like a brindle dog!) and he died three weeks later but there was nothing wrong with the tank. Sometimes fish are just stressed. It happens.

Oxygen is most effectively placed into the tank by water hitting the surface. This means the water from the filter needs to fall into the tank from about 1/2 inch above. That should prevent any more fish loss.

Hope it helps.

All I can add to the first reply is that you can also add oxygen to the water by simply dipping water out of the tank and pouring it back in to create the surface disturbance. If you could isolate him in another tank for the time being, that would also help so you can treat him alone.

mollies truthfully do larger in brackish water so it's oftentimes irritating in to have them in a freshwater tank. If you fairly like them then pass forward and get an additional one you'll have simply no longer gotten a healthful one. What i might do is placed a few aquarium salt for your tank (i feel its like a tbsp in line with five gallons) as if you want to no longer simplest aid them however your entire freshwater fish do larger and combat ailment larger. Also i might depart them within the smaller tank for approximately every week earlier than transporting them to the genuine fish tank...well success

20% water change with gravel vac. Assuming no catfish present, also add 1 rounded tablespoon per 5 gallons of water of aquarium salt (not table salt) as mollies need brackish water actually.

Your dissolved oxygen level is too low. To fix the problem, you will need to buy another, or a new filtration system.
