Torn Axle boots are not usually replaced unless you find them soon after they have ripped. Because of the added labour costs to remove and disassemble the axles it is common practice to replace the whole shaft. New shafts are more reliable and less expensive to install. Double check with your mechanic to see what remanufactured axle shafts will cost or get a second opinion.

The top of the line boots from autozone, cost $20 each.
That's just the boot, keeping the axle. If the car doesn't make a clicking noise when turning then this fix is possible. If it clicks then the entire axle will have to be replaced and the quote is not too far over.

Move on to another repair man. Geepers lady, You can buy two new half shafts for your car for less than $318. You gotta be sh**ing me! A half shaft contains four new constant velosity joints, *four new professionally clamped on boots* and a pair of axles.
You need only one half shaft. Call Advance Auto, Car Quest or NAPA for a price on a new rebuilt half shaft. The exact same labor is involved changing a boot a half shaft. Call other shops for installation only as youre bringing in your own part. Ford will install it even if you carry in the part.
Don't let people push you around.

This is not out of line for replacing the axles, Have the mechanic explain to you what parts he is replacing and the process involved. The mechanic is entitled to charge you for his time, equipment and expertise, just because you can get the parts for half that amount does not help you much.

I had a 1992 Plymouth Laser and I got the entire axle with the boot from Autozone for $64 including my core. You are getting ripped off.

For that much you could get rebuilt axle shafts with cv joints and new boots for both sides.
Check prices at Advance auto or Auto zone and then add in the labor charge.

i became counting on ebay for the axle boots and an predicted cost in keeping with axle is approximately 50 money. yet while he's can charge for hard artwork then the fee will definitly be bigger in keeping with axle.

who in the world is your mechanic?! For a car of that age, that is somewhat overpriced. realistically, you migt expect anywhere from $80 to $100.
