Why does the liberal lefty loonies and the Gay rights toonies insist that they are 10% of the population ?

Question

Globe and Mail.com says that one percent of the population of Canada identified themselves as being homosexua. There are 320,00 homosexual people living in Canada.
If you take in acount the alarming number of young homosexuals committing suicide and other dying fro sexually transmited diseases . one would have to conculude that the number of homosexuals ia actually decreasing, unless they have a way of cloning themselves to create a new breed of Homosexuls?

The poll was based on self-identification not by behaviour..

You have made some bad assumptions: If only one percent "identify" themselves as gay, understand that there are a multitude who do not identify themselves due to fear of reprisal, discrimination, etc. Further, there are more heterosexual people dying today of AIDS than homosexuals so if your assumption is right, straight people must be declining. Unfortunately, in Africa, there are a lot of places/countries where the population is being destroyed because of STDs and AIDS. Finally, according to the Department of Human services, there are a higher percentage of straight teens that commit suicide based on relationship issues than gay relationships, generally after the breakup between "straight" teen couples. I do not think there is a valid study in the world that would support the statistics you are presenting as having come from Glove and Mail as being a true representation of population breakdowns. I hope that you are not placing a whole lot of validity on your statement although I would agree that there may be 10% of the population that are "liberal lefty loonies" but that does not equate to gay...

Considering the blatant LIE told in your question yesterday, The one you deleted after being proven to be a LIE, why would anyone believe a single thing you post? You remember, the one about the 12,000 Same-sex Canadian Marriages that you claimed the majority of were foreigners? If a simple check of Wikipedia can prove you wrong, why should anyone take anything you have to say seriously?

There are two methods of counting. One is by self-identification, the other is by behavior. Traditionally studies that used self identification tended to show a low number, usually 3-4 % of the adult population, while studies that used behavior showed a higher number, in the 10-12% range (here I am referring to males only, I know less about studies on females).

Recently, as an incidental side effect of a study performed by Columbia Presbyterian Medical and the City of New York -- a statistically significant study was done using both. The report from that study is linked below (Discordance between sexual behavior and self reported sexual identity - the Annals of Internal Medicine Vol. 145; Number 6; Pages 416-425). The long and the short is that about 4% self-identified as either gay or bi, but 12.8% were engaging in exclusively or nearly exclusively homosexual activity. That means that 8.8% were identifying themselves as being straight, but were engaging in sex with same sex partners as a preferred mode of sexual congress.

The most famous source for the 10% figure -- the Kinsey study -- ignored self-identification in favor of behavior as the exclusive determinative - as have other confirming studies since that time -- while studies that have attempted to debunk Kinsey, often funded by the Right (since you want to air all the laundry, lets in fact, air all of it) have concentrated soley on asking people, sometimes literally on the street corner, whether they were gay or straight.

Of course all of this brings it back to your choice. What constitutes being gay? Is it self-identification? If you genuinely believe that a person who says he is straight, but only f**ks guys is in fact straight, then you are correct, the number is very low. If on the other hand, you think that it is consistent behavior that matters, not words -- then the higher number is correct.

The choice of which definition you choose is entirely yours. I don't know of anyone who has even begun to try and sort out the two in order to come up with a unified definition -- there is simply too much political baggage on both sides. The Right demands studies that support its position (although I fail to understand its position, rights are rights, I believe that minorities have rights as a matter of basic human decency and Constitutional law -- whether they are .5% or 50%), and the Left of course can demand no less.

I personally am conflicted. I know a lot of people who fit in that 8.8%... Alot of them are nasty. I admit, my lover and I have been together for more than 15 years and we are very happy with our life -- so maybe I'm kinda vanilla -- but I really mean, some of them are nasty! I'm personally inclined to divide the two things. Gays are self-identified. Homosexuals however are defined by their actions.

I happen to agree with Castle and with Radagast. Get over yourself and allow people their own lives. I have a 26 going on 27 year monogamous Lesbian marriage. I'm harming no one, so please keep your nose out of my bedroom. Get over the fact that homosexuals have existed since the Dawn of Time and move on with your life. Be more tolerant towards your neighbors and kinder to those around you...in a sense, love thy neighbors as you love thy self...and take that huge plank out your eye befor ministering to us. similar surveys in the US have revealed that only 1-3% of the population identitfies themselves as homosexual. But keeping up the ten percent lie helps them to convince politicians that they are an effective voters block/ Can you believe that people actually use wikpedia as a source of information? PS: just for your scientific education -- one survey by a Canadian newspaper does NOT transfer over to fact. it only means that 1% of the people who read that rag, and who replied to the survey, admitted they were gay. That is ALL that survey means.
