We have a friend who wants to come from ghana to the united states who is telling us she needs five thousand dollars just to prove she can take care of herself once she's in the United States & will return the money to us when we meet up? Is there really a charge for passenger traveling allowance? Please Help us decide.

Well, I do know that people coming in to the U.S. are only granted a visa if they can provide proof of financial resources. I am assuming Ghana is a country that a tourist visa is needed to visit the U.S.

However, I would be very very hesitant to just hand over that much money, unless you are prepared to lose it.

A better way to handle this is to write your friend a letter of invitation to the U.S., including in there that you will be providing for her needs while she is in the U.S.

Yes there is ,of sorts, immigration can sometimes ask you how much money is available for you to spend and ask to see it.Obviously 5 grand is too much money and so I am not convinced she is not playing you.She may need to show $500 but even that is usually not ground not not letting her into the copuntry especially as all that is checked when you go for a visa.Dont give out your hard earned cash.
