We just paid $800 for a wheel alignment, suspension, and a few other little things, new water pump and fan. But now the car shakes when we go over 50 on the driver side, we took it back to the mechanic who tried to say it's this and that, (trying to get more money). We weren't about to dish out more, so he tried a little 'test' switch the front and the back tire (on the driver's side) his test failed because it's still shaking. Is it the wheel alignment job he did?

Normally when a vehicle shakes at a given speed, it's wheel balance. Swapping the tires made no difference so balance may not be the problem but I think it's part of the difficulty. Have all four wheels balanced by someone who is competent. Also check for wheel rim damage and flat spotted tires. If you had recent suspension work done, I'd also check for loose components and such.

It's tought to say.
Usualy, that indicates, as your mechanic assumed, a wheel out of balance.

Just swaping tires front to rear only moves the problem from the front to the rear, but doesn't fix the problem.

Take your car to a tire shop that has a wheel balancer, and have them ballanced. All of them.

It's possible a wheel weight got knocked off the rim while the previous work was being done. (It happens)

If that fixes the problem, go back to the other mechanic and mention the fact that he may have knocked off a wheel weight, and ask he to re-emburse you for 1/4 of the bill of the wheel balance.

it probably is the alignment. when i bought my car (used),it shook like crazy over 50 or 55 mph. i had to take it back to the dealer twice to get the problem fixed. go back and see if he'll fix it, and if not, go to another mechanic. if it turns out that it is in fact the alignment, ask the first mechanic for your money back on that particular service. if he won't give it back, file a complaint with the better business bureau and your state's public service commission.

Bad wheel alignment. If hes not willing to fix it for FREE take your car to another place and have it fixed there. And If was something your Other mechanic said he fixed, Sue his *** for your money back and report him!

it could be a whole bunch of different things.
1) out of allignment
2) wheel balance
3) if the vehicle has ever been hit in the front then that could of warped ur frame.

im not a car person, but it sounds like its with the axle itself, like the bolts. It could also need realligned, which makes no sense for him to swap the tires and not recheck the alignment if you paid for it already and he did a shoddy job.
