The plot of an arranged marriage happened in quite a few korean dramas that i have watched. So I was just wondering if they still exist in modern south korea. I would also like to know how much freedom do the people have in deciding their marriage. Thanks!

It's not so much arranged marriages, I think. The only truly arranged marriages that would exist in Korea would be among the rich, i.e., what is called the Chaebol/Jaebol (family-owned conglomerates such as Samsung, Hyundai, etc). They have their marriages chosen carefully to extend the family company, prestige, etc.

I think what you're talking about are the "sun" and "maht-sun" that come up occasionally in Korean dramas. These are arranged dates, sometimes by the parents and sometimes by the individuals themselves. They are based off of personal preferences (if the individual asked for them) or by parental preferances. They can be extremely formal, "maht-sun" is a date that would ideally lead to partners in marriage, while a "sun" can be as lighthearted as a dating service.

As for freedom in marriage, it's basically like the U.S. The only restriction would be that, since Korea is a much more homogenous society than the U.S., there is still much taboo on mixed-race-marriages. However, even that is slowly changing, I think. People place much emphasis on having their parents/relatives approve of their marriage, they're more likely to bring home their fiance to truly "ask" for marriage than to declare a "we're getting married".

Hope that helps~!

I think arrange marrriages are no longer prevalent in Korea and China. In the Philippines, our TV stations air Korea TV dramas, and these reflects their day to day life. This arranged marriages are rarely tackled in the the said TV series.
